I work for a global ad agency/ well a digital ad agency essentially and I love it. I am allowed all kinds of awesome opportunities to travel and conceptualize and execute, for all these awesome clients that I have always dreamed of working on. Anyways, this time around I was sent to New York, NY to help with some work on some things. The company I work for is housed in the Hearst Tower, which is right next to Central Park and all kinds of amazing things in midtown New York. When I wasn’t comping things up till 1am I was allowed to have my own time and explore.

When you tell someone like me that I can just go explore then you better believe that I will do nothing short of that. SO these pictures that I posted above are all from my exploration of the city. This was one of my favorites times visiting New York, and I look forward to visiting it again more and more and more. I will have to send out a special thanks to my friend Graeme Fouste for giving me a place to stay the first night and taking me around with him to all the social events he was attending. Good times and a good person! So thanks Graeme!

In the mean time enjoy the photos and comment below if your bored and want to start a conversation! I would love to hear from you!

My Adventures in New York and Boston : Part 3

(download)

I woke the next morning showered and promptly made my way back to the bus station to head back to New York. Overall Boston was a blast and a historical city. Way bigger than I expected and they even had a pretty expansive China town.

Made the trip back to New York, freaked some girl out cause I told her I liked her shoes. She sat in silence the whole rest of the trip haha, and then made it back to the great city of New York, New York. Beautiful weather when I arrived. TONS of people out enjoying and just roaming around, it was crazy how many people were everywhere. I don’t understand how that many people can fit in that city and its area but somehow they make it work. Got off the bus and headed over to Williamsburg in Brooklyn to meet up with a friend named Lauren. She toke me to a couple bars and we just talked and caught up about life and then we went and had some amazing pizza that was all organic and fresh New York styled pizza. No offense Chicago but I think I like New York pizza better still. After that we went on the Staten Island Ferry and had some beers on it as we watch the city fade in the distance and looked at The Statue of Liberty in all of it glory. What a site to see light up at night. IT was amazing to see and made me proud of everything this country has done. Thanks France you rule! After that we went our separate ways and I went back and slept at Graeme’s again!

The Next morning I had decided it would be my roaming day and my small business meeting day as well. I immediately got up early and headed to the Rockefeller Center. I have been to the top on The Empire State building before so I wanted to see the city from a different perspective and different building. Plus working at an NBC affiliated News station had me interested to see the NBC head quarters. Made it to the top of this amazing building and once you get to the top you can go up to the very very tip top of the building. SO literally you are standing on the top of a tall skyscraper almost as tall as The Empire State Building. It was very empowering. Toke lots of pictures that you can see above. It is always nice to stand at the highest point of a big city and just look at the marvels of mankind. It is unbelievable to me still that humans can build some amazing things.

After that I went and meet up with some design people that I have been working with on some website stuff and then headed to central park for a minute and sat on a rock. Also a must do thing in New York when your there. THERE WERE SO MANY people out that day because of how nice it was, so naturally I toke some panos while enjoying this view. I kind of mediated in a weird sense while sitting there. Awesome park and it is crazy how big it is and just smack in the middle of this huge city.

After that I went and meet up with an old friend I haven’t seen in about 2 years. Alyssa! It was amazing to see her and catch up on life. She is still a very powerful person and I admire her for everything she is doing. Keep up the great work in life Alyssa, I know you will continue to do amazing things. See you when our paths cross again. After beers and Union Square with her I went and met back up with Lauren and had a margarita in East Village Park. Met up with Graeme and Shawna and headed to China town in Manhattan and had some really good Chinese. Enjoyed the food and company!

Lauren had bought two tickets to a show in Williamsburg and invited me along to see a band play called “The Bronx” we were running late and caught a cab and seriously this was one of the best parts of my trip! We get in the cab and the cabbie drives SUPER fast to get us from Manhattan to Williamsburg across the Brooklyn Bridge. A car ride across that bridge and seeing the city in all its glory at night was amazing. I truly felt like I was experiencing everyday life stuff in New York. It was a nice perspective to experience. We got there and rushed into the venue. When we walked in there was a mariachi band playing. I was way confused about this but later was told it was “The Bronx’s” side project. This punk band from LA had decided to make a mariachi-influenced album. IT WAS AWESOME!! Amazing musicians and amazing music. I seriously enjoyed the crap out of it! You should check out this project by them! It is called “Mariachi El Bronx” Just click the name to be redirected. Maybe it is the fact that my grandpa was 100% Dominican Republic or something, but I really am obsessed with this album that the released. After that we went to some local little places and headed back to Graeme’s and slept the rest of the night away!

I woke the next morning and had to head straight back to JFK to catch my flight. Toke like 4 trains and after lots of traveling and anxiety to get to the airport I made it! Rushed to get on the plane, spent $15 on a sandwich and water at the airport! Then got on the flight and headed back to Chicago. Flew into Chicago and it was a beautiful day here and it was amazing to fly over Lake Michigan and see the city on the coast from thousands of feet in the air! Landed and head back to my place.

Overall my trip was an amazing thing and experience all together. I couldn’t of asked for anything more from it. It was very self-meditating and rewarding in so many ways. I highly suggest to everyone to do something like this at one point in his or her lives. I feel like I really learned a bunch about my comfort levels and myself. I used to struggle with anxiety a whole bunch but I swear if you put yourself in situations and force your self to over come these struggles then you will defeat it and become something new!

I think the most important thing I learned from my trip was that; people need to take more chances. Trust me I understand how scary these things can be, especially coming from me. I am a person who gets shit on constantly so I probably should be the last person to take chances like this but life would be soooo boring with out. I would rather take chances and learn things the hard way then play the safe card my whole life and not experience the great things life has to offer. All the big names in the world toke chances, lots of them had no idea what they were doing half the time but these challenges and risky things led them to where they are today! Enjoy life, because when your laying on your death bed all that will matter is what you experienced and got out of the gift of life that we have been given.

My Adventures in New York and Boston : Part 2

(download)

The saga continues on to part two of my travels. This part takes place in Boston.

The next morning I woke early and made my way to Penn Station to get on the bus to go to Boston. After being straight up confused on where to go and seeing the United States Army everywhere with machine guns? At every major hub of transportation in New York there are military and police dudes walking around or standing with machine guns. Kind of scary but I guess security has been ramped up lately in New York. I got to the line for the bus super late, but the bus had not arrived yet thank god. Megabus rules and I toke that 4-hour trip to Boston. Outlets and free wifi on the bus is always a plus.

If you ever get a chance go north up Manhattan to Boston do it! The land gets so amazing up that way. Roads that go through mountains and all kinds of bridges on top of other bridges. It is seriously a beautiful thing to see. Valleys with houses built into the side as you get into Connecticut. Just a really nice trip in general. Well other than the dude who talked a lot and probably was on some type of Methamphetamine. Dude had boogers galore also. OH well.

Arrived in Boston and went directly from Bus Station to Sam Adams Brewery, and just a little side note here, the transit system in Boston made me laugh a little bit. It is called the “T” and the cards you get to go on the trains are called a Charlie Card. Kind of a funny thing. Basically the “T” is a trolley that can go under ground at times. You can tell that it was built in the 60’s and they were trying to give it a futuristic feel. Its orange and built in a dome like structure. Wood paneling EVERYWHERE! Haha a must see.

Made it to the brewery, and toke a tour of the Brewery and had some Red Brick Ale that you can only drink in Boston. That was pretty amazing to taste and see where all the magic happens of a beer I have been collecting for about 5 years now. Saw some Utopias brewing and aging in the Oak barrels. If you follow beer at all you understand why this is a big deal. The next release of this beer will be in 2011 and it goes for about $200 a bottle, and that is at cost. Sam Adams makes no money on this brew. Good luck on finding it, and if you do expect to pay around $300 for it. Mad respect for this company as they basically brought craft brewing back in action. After that I asked a local girl and her friend (I could tell he was visiting her) if she could suggest a place for me to eat some good food and she invited me along with them to go to a local bar.

She said: “I am pretty sure your not a serial killer so you can come hang with us if you want”

I promptly responded with: “How do I know you guys are not the serial killers?”

She responded with: “because you would already be dead”

So naturally I jumped in a car with them and went to an amazing bar and drank some really awesome beers and had a great dinner with these two. Very smart people, one was a Physiologist at the age of 26 and the other was in pharmacy school and about to graduate with his masters. I eventually felt like a burden to them so I split ways and made my way to the Hostel I would be staying for the night.

I am not even kidding this place was soooo scary. I opened the door to the place and I swear lighting struck in the back ground. There was a phone you had to dial to get the people to come to the front door. A old school rotary phone. “Dial 1 2 for service” So I did and a man with the typical horror movie voice answered “How may I be of service to you?” I told him who I was and it buzzed me in. He told me to sit on the couch and wait for him to come out for assistance. I seriously was waiting to hear the chainsaw crank up and him come running out and chop me up in top little pieces. This place is totally where the must of filmed the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. If you have ever watched that movie you would understand, everything from the location of the steps to the red door. Also a deer head on the wall with a bandana on for added taste. The guy came out to help me and was a skinny sickly little dude. He helped me out and then told me to follow him to my quarters. We went across the street to an even older house and went through like 5 locked doors and up to the 4th floor. I stayed in a room with 5 mattresses on the floor and had the whole floor to my self. Most of the time this is a good thing but in this place it was a SCARY thing!! I decided I should go out and mingle some more so I would not have to be at the place unless I needed to sleep. I went out had some more amazing beers, meet some neat people and made my way back to the Hostel. It was about 3am at this point, and I walked into the house and there was an old man hutch back and all with a cane walking around. He asked who I was and I told him I was staying upstairs. He then asked my name and I responded.

Me: “My name is Brandon”
Old Man: “NO!, my name is Brandon”
Me: “Oh ok, but my name is also Brandon”
Old Man: “B R E N D O N?”
Me: “No B R A”
Old Man: “Sounds like a fine name to have, sleep tight and enjoy your night here”
Me: ( no response as I ran up the stairs and locked all 7 doors to my room! )

Stay tuned for Part 3 coming soon. I get up and head back to New York and enjoy some fine foods and beer, and some amazing views of the city that you wont wanna miss out on seeing.

My Adventures in New York and Boston : Part 1

(download)

This is part 1 of my adventures in New York and Boston, I will be posting these by part becase each section gets kinda lengthy in detail. Look for each part as they come out!

So I just got back from the great city of New York, and let me just start out by saying NEW YORK is an amazing feat for our society as a whole. All I could think the whole time is that everything that surrounds you is man made and constructed over time by humans. It is kind of amazing when you really think about the complexity of a city like New York. The amount of people that have probably had a hand in building that city to what it is today, a complex place with layers of streets and tunnels and all kind of surprises around every corner. Sooo many people in this city also. New York to me is a place that you pass through in your life at least once or twice. It seems like a city that has people come in for a year or two and then leave only to be replaced by the next generation of young people coming to the city to explore and live out that adventurous time in their lives. Of course there are exceptions to this, but that is what it really comes down to for most people living there.

I woke at 7am and traveled to the airport on Tuesday. It was bright and sunny here in Chicago when I was leaving. I flew JetBlue to New York. The next time you fly you really need to try to fly JetBlue. That was by far the best travel and flight I have ever had. TVs in the headrest, free snacks and lots more legroom than most flights that I have been on. A great company with great design behind it as well. So that is always a plus.

When I landed it was rainy and cold in New York but I didn’t care. It was ironic that one of the few days in Chicago where it was amazing outside I left to fly into cold and rain. Oh well … worth it. I got off the plane and travel directly to the MoMA in Manhattan to see all the wonderful works of art from our history. The MoMA is a must see place. So next time your in New York stop by and take a look at all the amazing things they have in there. I made my way to the top of the MoMA and came to an exhibit by an artist by the name of: Marina Abramović. Seriously crazy stuff in this, if you have never heard of her look it up, or just click her name. I linked it to some info about her. The exhibit had nude woman just starring at each other and people with their hair tied together and not moving and all kinds of anti war art with cow bones and blood and stuff. She also experimented in art involving noise, basically people screaming at each other to cause straight up human emotion. The weirdest part was walking into a big room where it was a nude woman standing up, elevated by a bicycle seat just sitting/standing there with her arms out in front of her. You immediately go through a look away type of reaction. Maybe that is what she is trying to provoke, regardless it was powerful and not just because there was a some young nude chick on a bicycle, I mean don’t get me wrong … she was attractive so not complaining but seriously what the hell. Regardless I respect the hell out of it because she really pushed the boundaries of art and peoples reactions.

After that ordeal I meet up with my friend Graeme Fouste and hung with him and went and got some Crif Dogs, and then went to the oldest Irish pup in New York called McShorley’s. This place was ancient. I am surprised it was still standing honestly, but an awesome experience. All the people working here were authentic Irish people and it gave it a very interest vibe and experience. You could only buy two beers at a time that was the rule. Also you only had a choice between dark and light. When you got your beer they would come over and slam it down on the table. Drank there and then went had some Chinese food and went back to Graeme and his wonderful girlfriend Shawna’s place to sleep. I am forever in debt to them now. They let me crash each night at their place and I can’t thank them enough for it. Thanks guys you rule and have the cutest dog ever! A teacup Yorkie name Bella. Bella you are the only woman in my life if you are reading this.

... To be contunined in Part 2.

p.s. sorry some of the pictures are subpar in this post, I was not suppose to take pictures in the MoMA so I had to take quick off centered blurry ones, haha oh well.
